NewDoc vs 13SICK

Side-by-side comparison of NewDoc and 13SICK: bulk-billing terms, hours, and which model fits your situation.

What's the difference between NewDoc and 13SICK?

Both can bulk-bill eligible Medicare patients, but on different terms. NewDoc bulk-bills every consultation for all eligible cardholders. 13SICK's telehealth bulk-billing applies only after hours and only if you also meet one of its eligibility criteria (a recent visit to a 13SICK-serviced clinic, an urgent problem, ATSI background, homelessness, or a sexual/mental health or COVID booking). NewDoc is telehealth only, available across Australia generally 8 am to 11 pm most days. 13SICK is an after-hours service offering both home visits and telehealth within its coverage area in major cities.

Choose by what you need: NewDoc for daytime and evening telehealth anywhere in Australia, or 13SICK when you specifically need an after-hours doctor to attend your home.

When NewDoc fits

NewDoc suits care that does not need someone to physically attend your home. Choose NewDoc if any of the following apply:

  • You need a daytime or evening appointment; NewDoc is available generally 8 am to 11 pm, including the standard weekday hours that 13SICK's after-hours model does not cover.
  • You are anywhere in Australia and want telehealth, rather than being limited to a home-visit coverage area.
  • You want a FRACGP-qualified Australian-trained general practitioner specifically.
  • You need a script, certificate, mental health care plan, or referral that can be handled by video or phone and sent to you electronically.
  • You want ongoing care with every review consultation bulk-billed during the day.

When 13SICK might fit

13SICK fills a genuinely different need. Choose 13SICK if any of the following apply:

  • You need a doctor to physically attend your home after hours, which a telehealth service cannot do.
  • Your need arises in an after-hours window (a weeknight, weekend, or public holiday) and you are within 13SICK's coverage area.
  • You want an in-person assessment at home rather than a video or phone consultation.

The two services can also be complementary: NewDoc for daytime and evening telehealth, and an after-hours home-visit service such as 13SICK for the times a doctor needs to come to you. For genuine emergencies, call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department rather than booking either service.

Frequently asked questions

Do both NewDoc and 13SICK bulk bill?

Both can, but on different terms. NewDoc bulk-bills every telehealth consultation it offers for all eligible Medicare cardholders, during its operating hours (generally 8 am to 11 pm most days). Per 13SICK's bulk-billed-telehealth page, a 13SICK telehealth consult is bulk-billed only after hours AND only if you also meet one of its eligibility criteria: a visit to one of its serviced GP clinics in the past 12 months, an urgent problem, ATSI background, risk of homelessness, or a sexual health, mental health, or COVID booking. 13SICK operates weeknights before 8 am and after 6 pm, Saturdays before 8 am and after 12 pm, and all day Sundays and public holidays.

What is the main difference between NewDoc and 13SICK?

The model and the hours. NewDoc is telehealth only (video or phone) and is available across Australia during the day and evening. 13SICK offers both home visits, where a doctor attends your home, and telehealth, but only during after-hours periods and within its coverage area in major cities. If you need care during the day, NewDoc is available; if you need an after-hours home visit, 13SICK provides one and NewDoc does not.

Does NewDoc do home visits?

No. NewDoc is a telehealth-only service; consultations happen by video or phone, and any eScript, certificate, or referral is sent to you electronically. 13SICK is one option if you specifically need a doctor to attend your home after hours.

Which is available during the day?

NewDoc. NewDoc is generally available 8 am to 11 pm most days, which covers daytime and evening needs. Per 13SICK's public site, 13SICK operates only in after-hours periods (before 8 am and after 6 pm on weeknights, weekends, and public holidays), so it is not available for a standard weekday daytime appointment.

Are both staffed by GPs?

NewDoc states it uses FRACGP-qualified, Australian-trained general practitioners exclusively. 13SICK describes its clinicians as registered Australian doctors and refers to subscribing GP practices, but does not publicly itemise whether every attending doctor holds FRACGP fellowship on the page sampled. Both require AHPRA registration.

Can both send an eScript to my phone?

Yes. Both offer ePrescriptions. NewDoc sends the eScript by SMS after the telehealth consultation. 13SICK can issue an ePrescription as part of an after-hours home visit or telehealth consult within its coverage area.
