Get an imaging referral online. Bulk billed

See a GP via telehealth and receive your imaging referral by email. X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs. No out-of-pocket costs for eligible Medicare patients.

How to get an imaging referral online

If your doctor recommends an X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI, you need a referral from a GP. At NewDoc, you can get this referral through a bulk billed telehealth consultation without visiting a clinic. Book an appointment, speak with an AHPRA-registered GP via video or phone, and your imaging referral will be emailed to you directly after the consultation.

You then book an appointment at a radiology or imaging centre of your choice. Your results are sent back to your NewDoc GP who will contact you to discuss the findings and arrange any further care.

Types of imaging your GP can refer you for

Your NewDoc GP can issue referrals for a range of medical imaging depending on your symptoms and clinical needs. Common imaging referrals include X-rays for bone fractures, chest conditions, and joint problems, ultrasounds for abdominal pain, pregnancy, musculoskeletal injuries, and thyroid concerns, CT scans for more detailed imaging of bones, organs, and soft tissue, and MRIs for detailed imaging of joints, the spine, brain, and soft tissue injuries.

Your GP may also refer you for specific imaging such as mammograms for breast screening, DEXA scans for bone density, or echocardiograms for heart assessment. The type of imaging depends on your symptoms and what your GP is investigating.

Medicare coverage for imaging

Many imaging services are covered or partially covered by Medicare when you have a valid GP referral. X-rays and basic ultrasounds are commonly bulk billed at many imaging centres. CT scans and MRIs may attract a gap fee depending on the provider and the type of scan.

Your imaging centre can confirm the cost when you book your appointment. Having a GP referral ensures you receive the maximum Medicare rebate available for your scan. Without a referral, you would need to pay the full cost out of pocket.

What to expect at your imaging appointment

After receiving your referral by email, you can book at any radiology or imaging centre in Australia. Major providers include I-MED Radiology, Sonic Healthcare, and various local radiology practices. Most centres allow you to book online or by phone.

Preparation depends on the type of scan. Some imaging requires fasting, drinking water beforehand, or wearing loose clothing. Your imaging centre will advise you of any preparation when you book. Your GP will also let you know during the consultation if any specific preparation is needed.

Getting your results

Imaging results and the radiologist's report are sent electronically to your NewDoc GP. Most results are available within a few business days, though some urgent scans may be reported sooner. Your GP will review the report and contact you to discuss the findings.

If your results require follow-up, your GP can arrange a further telehealth consultation to discuss treatment options, provide referrals to specialists, or order additional investigations. All follow-up consultations are also bulk billed for eligible Medicare patients.
