What is bulk billed telehealth and who can get it?

Bulk billed telehealth is a video or phone consultation with an Australian-trained GP that is billed directly to Medicare, with no out-of-pocket cost to eligible Medicare cardholders. The consultation, eScripts, medical certificates, and referrals are all included.

NewDoc offers same-day bulk billed telehealth appointments seven days a week with AHPRA-registered GPs, available Australia-wide for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.

What is bulk billed telehealth?

Bulk billing means your GP consultation is paid for entirely by Medicare, with no out-of-pocket cost to you. At NewDoc, eligible patients can access a full GP telehealth consultation, including prescriptions, medical certificates, specialist referrals, and pathology requests, at no charge.

Telehealth consultations are conducted by video or phone call with an Australian-trained General Practitioner. The clinical standard is the same as an in-person GP visit. Your doctor can assess your symptoms, provide medical advice, prescribe medication, issue certificates, and arrange referrals, all from your home, workplace, or anywhere in Australia.

What is included in a bulk billed consult?

Every NewDoc bulk billed consultation includes access to the full range of GP services available via telehealth. There are no add-on fees or surcharges. A single consultation can cover any combination of:

Some telehealth providers in Australia charge extra for certificates, scripts, or referrals on top of the consultation fee. NewDoc includes all of these as part of the consultation.

Who is eligible for bulk billing?

To access bulk billed telehealth through NewDoc, you need a valid Medicare card and must be located in an eligible area under current Medicare telehealth provisions. The eligibility check happens during the booking process, so you will know before your appointment whether your consultation will be bulk billed. Most of Australia is covered under the current provisions. If you are not eligible for bulk billing, a private consultation fee applies.

How NewDoc compares

NewDoc uses exclusively Australian-trained General Practitioners for all consultations. Many other telehealth providers use a mix of GPs and nurse practitioners. While nurse practitioners provide valuable care, GPs have completed additional years of specialist training in general practice and have broader clinical scope, particularly for complex prescribing and referral decisions.

NewDoc also does not charge extra for any service delivered during the consultation. If your GP issues a script, a certificate, and a referral in the same appointment, all three are included at no additional cost to you.

What to have ready before your consultation

Before you join the call, it helps to have:

  • Your Medicare card number (entered at booking so eligibility can be confirmed)
  • A list of current medications, including over-the-counter and supplements
  • Notes on your symptoms: when they started, severity, what makes them better or worse
  • Any recent test results you would like the GP to see (they can be emailed in or shown on camera)
  • A quiet, private space with a stable internet or phone connection

You can choose video or phone at the time of booking. Most consultations take 10 to 15 minutes. If your concern requires a physical examination or in-person care, your GP will let you know and help coordinate the next step.

Bulk billed online doctor across Australia

NewDoc is available Australia-wide as a bulk billed online GP service. Consultations are delivered via secure video or phone call, so you can see a doctor from home, from work, from a regional or remote area, anywhere you have mobile reception or an internet connection. All GPs are Australian-trained and registered with AHPRA.

Because the service runs on Medicare telehealth item numbers rather than a separate subscription or platform fee, eligible patients pay nothing out of pocket for consultations, scripts, certificates, and referrals. You do not need to be an existing NewDoc patient or to have previously spoken with a NewDoc GP to book. Same-day bookings, scheduled appointments, and after-hours slots are all bulk billed on the same terms for eligible Medicare cardholders.

Bulk billed telehealth by state

Each state page covers local public hospital networks, state health hotlines, and bulk billing context for that jurisdiction.

Conditions commonly managed via telehealth

Many common health concerns can be effectively assessed and managed through a telehealth GP consultation. Presentations that are generally well suited to an online doctor appointment include respiratory infections such as cold and flu, urinary tract infections such as UTI, skin conditions such as rashes or acne, mental health concerns including anxiety and low mood, ongoing chronic disease management, and sexual health consultations. Your GP can also issue repeat or new prescriptions, referrals, and medical certificates during a single bulk billed telehealth visit.

Telehealth is not appropriate for all situations. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe injury, please call 000 or visit your nearest emergency department. You can check current emergency department wait times on our site. Conditions that require a hands-on physical examination, such as abdominal palpation or joint assessment, may also need an in-person visit. Your telehealth GP can help determine whether a face-to-face appointment is needed. For walk-in care that is bulk billed but not an emergency, compare ED, urgent care, and telehealth to choose the option that fits your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Is NewDoc telehealth bulk billed with no out-of-pocket cost?

Yes, for eligible Medicare patients. NewDoc bulk bills the consultation to Medicare, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to you. This includes any scripts, certificates, or referrals issued during the consultation.

Do I need to have seen a doctor in person in the last 12 months?

Eligibility for bulk billed telehealth depends on your location and Medicare status under current provisions. NewDoc checks your eligibility during the booking process so you know before your appointment. You do not need to be an existing NewDoc patient.

Are the doctors real GPs or nurse practitioners?

All NewDoc consultations are conducted by Australian-trained General Practitioners. NewDoc does not use nurse practitioners for consultations.

What if I am not eligible for bulk billing?

If you are not eligible for bulk billing, a private consultation fee of $69.95 applies for a 10-minute telehealth appointment. This still includes all scripts, certificates, and referrals at no extra charge.

What do I need for a telehealth appointment?

You will need your Medicare card, a list of any current medications you are taking, and a stable internet or phone connection. It also helps to be in a quiet, private space so you can speak openly with your GP about your health concerns.

Can I see the same GP for follow-up appointments?

NewDoc aims to provide continuity of care where possible. When booking a follow-up appointment, you can request a specific GP. Availability may vary depending on scheduling, but the platform is designed to support ongoing relationships between patients and their preferred doctor.

How quickly can I see a GP?

Same-day and next-available appointments are offered seven days a week, subject to GP availability. Most bookings are fulfilled within minutes to a few hours. Same-day slots are shown at the time of booking so you can pick a time that works for you.

Is bulk billed telehealth available at night and on weekends?

NewDoc telehealth appointments are available seven days a week, including weekday evenings, weekends, and public holidays, subject to GP availability. Same-day and next-available slots are shown at the time of booking. There is no surcharge for out-of-hours appointments.

Do I need a Medicare card for a bulk billed telehealth consult?

Yes. Bulk billing requires a valid Medicare card. If you do not have a Medicare card (for example, overseas visitors or expired cards), you can still book a telehealth consultation at the private fee. Reciprocal Health Care Agreement card holders may also be eligible; your eligibility is checked during the booking process.

Can I book on behalf of a family member?

Yes. You can book for another person provided you enter their Medicare card details and are authorised to act on their behalf. For children, a parent or guardian needs to be present during the consultation. For dependent adults, the patient or their authorised representative should be available during the call.
