How NewDoc serves Australian Capital Territory
NewDoc is a 100% telehealth general practice service. Consultations are delivered by AHPRA-registered Australian General Practitioners with FRACGP fellowship, by phone or video, and are bulk billed directly to Medicare for eligible cardholders. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the consultation, and any eScripts, medical certificates, or specialist referrals issued during the appointment are included.
Australian Capital Territory has approximately 486,200 residents (Australian Bureau of Statistics, September 2025). NewDoc telehealth is available statewide for eligible Medicare cardholders, regardless of suburb. There are no catchment restrictions and you do not need to be an existing NewDoc patient.
Bulk billing in Australian Capital Territory
The ACT recorded the lowest GP bulk billing rate of any state or territory at 53.8% for the November 2025 to January 2026 quarter (Department of Health), well below the 81.4% national average. The territory also saw the smallest year-on-year improvement following the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program launch on 1 November 2025, rising only 1.3 percentage points while every other state moved more sharply. In practical terms, most Canberra GP appointments still carry an out-of-pocket cost, and finding a same-day bulk billed slot through an ACT clinic is genuinely difficult. NewDoc bulk bills the consultation directly to Medicare for eligible cardholders, removing that out-of-pocket gap regardless of which Canberra suburb you live in.
The 53.8% figure for Australian Capital Territory is the lowest of any state or territory and reflects all GP attendances in the November 2025 to January 2026 quarter, as reported by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. NewDoc consultations are bulk billed for every eligible Medicare cardholder, so the state-level distribution does not affect what you pay for a NewDoc consult.
Geography and GP access in ACT
The ACT has approximately 486,000 residents (ABS, September 2025) concentrated in the Canberra urban area, with smaller populations in the rural districts surrounding the city. Bulk billing access has been the lowest in Australia for more than two decades and remains the lowest after the November 2025 incentive reforms, reflecting a long-standing structural reliance on private fees for general practice. ACT residents can also access free nurse-led Walk-in Centres for non-life-threatening illness, though these centres are not a substitute for a GP consultation.
Cities and regions covered
Canberra (north)
Belconnen, Gungahlin, Dickson, Civic, and the inner-north suburbs are well served by NewDoc telehealth for routine GP needs. Belconnen also hosts one of the ACT's Walk-in Centres for non-life-threatening in-person care when needed.
Canberra (south and Tuggeranong)
Phillip, Woden, Tuggeranong, and the southern Canberra suburbs can avoid both private consultation fees and waiting room time by booking a bulk billed telehealth consult. NewDoc GPs are typically available the same day or next day.
Queanbeyan and surrounds
Patients in Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, and the Canberra-region towns just over the NSW border can also use NewDoc telehealth, with the same bulk billing terms for eligible Medicare cardholders.
Emergency and in-person care in ACT
Telehealth is not appropriate for emergencies. For life-threatening situations in Australian Capital Territory, call 000 or attend your nearest public emergency department. For non-life-threatening illness or injury where an in-person assessment is needed but you do not require an ED, the ACT Health website lists local services and after-hours options.
ACT health resources and hotlines
Telehealth complements, but does not replace, the public health services in your state. The following resources are operated by ACT Health and partner organisations and may be useful alongside a NewDoc consultation.
- Access Mental Health (ACT): 1800 629 354. Canberra Health Services' central 24/7 mental health intake and triage line for ACT residents seeking mental health support or referral.
- healthdirect helpline: 1800 022 222. 24/7 phone advice from a registered nurse for any non-emergency health concern. Funded by the Australian Government.
Australian Capital Territory also operates ACT Walk-in Centres. Free nurse-led clinics operated by Canberra Health Services, open 7 days a week for non-life-threatening illness and injury in patients aged over 1 year. Useful when an in-person assessment is needed and a GP is not available.
Common conditions managed via telehealth
A NewDoc telehealth GP can assess and manage a wide range of common conditions for Australian Capital Territory residents, including respiratory and urinary tract infections, anxiety, depression, hay fever, UTIs, insomnia, skin conditions, and ongoing management of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. The full list is available on the conditions page.
