How NewDoc serves South Australia
NewDoc is a 100% telehealth general practice service. Consultations are delivered by AHPRA-registered Australian General Practitioners with FRACGP fellowship, by phone or video, and are bulk billed directly to Medicare for eligible cardholders. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the consultation, and any eScripts, medical certificates, or specialist referrals issued during the appointment are included.
South Australia has approximately 1.9 million residents (Australian Bureau of Statistics, September 2025). NewDoc telehealth is available statewide for eligible Medicare cardholders, regardless of suburb. There are no catchment restrictions and you do not need to be an existing NewDoc patient.
Bulk billing in South Australia
South Australia's GP bulk billing rate was 85.3% for the November 2025 to January 2026 quarter (Department of Health), sitting above the 81.4% national average and up 3.6 percentage points year-on-year following the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program launch on 1 November 2025. Adelaide metro has a relatively dense GP workforce, but parts of regional SA including the Eyre Peninsula, Far North, and Limestone Coast are recognised by the federal Department of Health as areas of workforce need, with longer waits for in-person appointments and fewer current bulk billing practices. Telehealth keeps a fully bulk billed pathway open across the whole state regardless of which practices in your area are still accepting new bulk billed patients.
The 85.3% figure for South Australia reflects all GP attendances in the November 2025 to January 2026 quarter, as reported by the Australian Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. NewDoc consultations are bulk billed for every eligible Medicare cardholder, so the state-level distribution does not affect what you pay for a NewDoc consult.
Geography and GP access in SA
Around three-quarters of South Australia's population lives in Greater Adelaide. Regional hubs at Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Port Augusta, and the Riverland anchor smaller catchments spread across one of the largest state footprints in Australia. The APY Lands in the far north-west are served by Nganampa Health Council and other Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations; telehealth sits alongside those services rather than in place of them. Travel between communities is otherwise a defining feature of SA primary care, and telehealth flattens that geographic gap for routine GP needs.
Cities and regions covered
Adelaide and the metro area
Adelaide patients across the CBD, the northern suburbs, Port Adelaide, the eastern suburbs, Marion, and the southern suburbs can book a bulk billed NewDoc telehealth appointment without travelling to a clinic. Useful for working professionals, parents managing school pick-ups, and residents in suburbs with limited bulk billing GP availability.
Mount Gambier, the Limestone Coast, and Fleurieu
Patients in Mount Gambier, Millicent, Naracoorte, Victor Harbor, and the Fleurieu Peninsula can access a NewDoc telehealth GP without driving hours to find a current bulk billing practice. Routine prescriptions, certificates, and pathology referrals can be handled in a single appointment.
Eyre Peninsula and the West Coast
Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Ceduna, and the broader Eyre Peninsula sit in one of Australia's most persistent GP workforce-shortage regions. NewDoc telehealth runs over phone as well as video, so a basic mobile signal is typically sufficient for a routine consult.
Riverland, Murraylands, and the Far North
Residents in the Riverland, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, Roxby Downs, Coober Pedy, and the remote north often face long drives or limited bulk billing options locally. A 10-minute video or phone consult replaces much of that travel for routine GP needs.
Live ED wait times in SA
Telehealth is not appropriate for emergencies. If you are unsure whether your symptoms warrant an emergency department visit, NewDoc publishes live wait times for 6 SA hospitals so you can make an informed decision.

SA health resources and hotlines
Telehealth complements, but does not replace, the public health services in your state. The following resources are operated by SA Health and partner organisations and may be useful alongside a NewDoc consultation.
- Mental Health Triage Service: 13 14 65. Free 24/7 statewide phone service staffed by mental health clinicians. Provides triage, assessment, and referral to SA Health community and hospital mental health teams.
- healthdirect helpline: 1800 022 222. 24/7 phone advice from a registered nurse for any non-emergency health concern. Funded by the Australian Government.
Common conditions managed via telehealth
A NewDoc telehealth GP can assess and manage a wide range of common conditions for South Australia residents, including respiratory and urinary tract infections, anxiety, depression, hay fever, UTIs, insomnia, skin conditions, and ongoing management of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. The full list is available on the conditions page.
