Western Australia bulk billed telehealth GP

Bulk billed telehealth GP consultations for Western Australian Medicare cardholders. AHPRA-registered General Practitioners, eScripts to your phone, no out-of-pocket cost for the consult.

How NewDoc serves Western Australia

NewDoc is a 100% telehealth general practice service. Consultations are delivered by AHPRA-registered Australian General Practitioners with FRACGP fellowship, by phone or video, and are bulk billed directly to Medicare for eligible cardholders. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the consultation, and any eScripts, medical certificates, or specialist referrals issued during the appointment are included.

Western Australia has approximately 3.06 million residents (Australian Bureau of Statistics, September 2025). NewDoc telehealth is available statewide for eligible Medicare cardholders, regardless of suburb. There are no catchment restrictions and you do not need to be an existing NewDoc patient.

Bulk billing in Western Australia

WA's GP bulk billing rate was 79.9% for the November 2025 to January 2026 quarter (Department of Health), up 5.4 percentage points year-on-year following the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program launch on 1 November 2025. Even with that improvement, WA still has a smaller GP workforce per resident than most states, and remote-area gaps are significant. In-person same-day bulk billing appointments can still be hard to find, particularly outside Perth. Telehealth keeps a fully bulk billed pathway open for eligible Medicare cardholders without depending on local GP capacity.

The 79.9% figure for Western Australia reflects all GP attendances in the November 2025 to January 2026 quarter, as reported by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. NewDoc consultations are bulk billed for every eligible Medicare cardholder, so the state-level distribution does not affect what you pay for a NewDoc consult.

Geography and GP access in WA

WA has roughly 3.1 million residents (ABS, September 2025) and the largest geographic footprint of any Australian state. Most residents live in the Perth metro area, but Bunbury, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Albany, Karratha, and Broome anchor regional populations spread across thousands of kilometres. Travel between communities is a defining feature of WA primary care, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service plus state-funded outreach exist precisely because in-person GP access at scale is not always practical.

Cities and regions covered

Perth and the metro area

Perth patients across the CBD, Joondalup, Mandurah, Rockingham, and Armadale catchments can book a bulk billed NewDoc telehealth appointment without travelling to a clinic. Live ED wait times for Royal Perth, Fiona Stanley, Sir Charles Gairdner, and other major Perth hospitals are also published on NewDoc.

Bunbury, the South West, and Great Southern

Patients in Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Albany, and the broader South West and Great Southern regions can access a NewDoc telehealth GP without driving hours to find a current bulk billing practice.

Geraldton, the Mid West, and Pilbara

Geraldton, Carnarvon, Karratha, Port Hedland, and surrounding communities are well served by telehealth for routine consults, especially where local GP wait times stretch beyond what a Medicare consult should take.

Goldfields and remote WA

Kalgoorlie, Esperance, and remote WA patients face some of the longest in-person GP waits in the country. NewDoc telehealth runs over phone as well as video, so a stable mobile signal is sufficient for a routine consult.

Live ED wait times in WA

Telehealth is not appropriate for emergencies. If you are unsure whether your symptoms warrant an emergency department visit, NewDoc publishes live wait times for 10 WA hospitals so you can make an informed decision.

WA health resources and hotlines

Telehealth complements, but does not replace, the public health services in your state. The following resources are operated by WA Department of Health and partner organisations and may be useful alongside a NewDoc consultation.

  • Mental Health Emergency Response Line (MHERL) (Perth Metro): 1300 555 788. 24/7 mental health crisis line for adults and families operated by WA Health. The Peel region uses 1800 676 822, and Rurallink covers regional and remote WA.
  • healthdirect helpline: 1800 022 222. 24/7 phone advice from a registered nurse for any non-emergency health concern. Funded by the Australian Government.

Common conditions managed via telehealth

A NewDoc telehealth GP can assess and manage a wide range of common conditions for Western Australia residents, including respiratory and urinary tract infections, anxiety, depression, hay fever, UTIs, insomnia, skin conditions, and ongoing management of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. The full list is available on the conditions page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see a NewDoc GP from anywhere in WA?

Yes. NewDoc telehealth consultations are delivered by phone or video and are available statewide for eligible Medicare patients in Western Australia, including remote areas with mobile coverage.

Is NewDoc bulk billed for WA Medicare cardholders?

Yes. NewDoc bulk bills consultations directly to Medicare for eligible cardholders, with no out-of-pocket cost. Scripts, certificates, and referrals are included.

What if I need an in-person GP appointment in WA?

Your NewDoc GP will tell you if an in-person examination is needed and can help plan next steps. HealthDirect's national service finder lists local GPs and bulk billing practices by suburb, and your GP can also point you to relevant local services.

Can NewDoc send an eScript to a WA pharmacy?

Yes. eScripts are SMS tokens that any pharmacy in Australia, including any WA pharmacy, can scan to dispense your medication. No paper script is required.

Is telehealth practical for remote WA patients?

Phone consultations work over a basic mobile signal, and video consultations work over any reasonable internet connection. A NewDoc GP can issue scripts, certificates, and referrals during the consultation, which removes much of the travel that would otherwise be needed.

What about emergencies?

Telehealth is not for emergencies. Call 000 for life-threatening situations or attend your nearest emergency department. NewDoc publishes live wait times for WA emergency departments so you can choose where to attend if your situation is urgent but not life-threatening.
